Why you might consider choosing a documentary wedding photographer.

Today I thought I would discuss with you a bit more about what it is to be a documentary wedding photographer and why I think it’s something you should consider for your wedding photography if you are maybe looking for a more relaxed approach.

I think most wedding photographers these days have a candid element to their style of photography but the difference is what we are passionate about when it comes to photographing a wedding. I know lots of incredible wedding photographers who have a deep love of the portraits and the details and I 100% recommend them when couples come to me with those elements as a priority but it’s not where my passion lies when it comes to weddings.

My work is inspired by people who love one another.

And that is not just limited to the couple on a wedding day. That’s one of the biggest plus points of choosing a photographer that is passionate about photographing your wedding in more of a documentary style, we actively spend our time seeking out those moments to capture for you. It’s the emotion and fun we get excited about and that happens not just with you guys as a couple but with the people you have chosen to celebrate with you.

Documentary wedding photography is still creative as well.

I think a lot pf people think that it’s just limited to capturing the moment in any which way and while the moment and emotion always takes priority we also are constantly considering the other elements like available light and composition so we can make our images have even more impact. It’s that challenge of not only capturing the moment unfolding but also making that moment even better by using our skills as a photographer.

The other plus point about having a documentary wedding photographer for your wedding is that it allows for way more time to enjoy yourselves. We don’t want to take you away from the fun for long periods of time or have you and your guests stood around for endless group photos. It’s important to the end goal of you having a beautiful and authentic visual story that you are having as much fun as possible with the people you love.

That doesn’t mean I don’t do group photos or couple photos.

I very much do but they are kept to a minimum. Most of my couples only want around 8-10 formal groups and we can get them done in around 20mins (if everyone behaves) and we always plan the couple photos into those pockets of time in the day where it won’t be taking you away from the fun and we don’t disappear for more than 20-30mins.

Another reason many of my couples come to me is because they are worried about having their photo taken.

They find the idea of being centre of attention pretty uncomfortable and the thought of being posed in a cheesy way for long periods of time just does not appeal and they want a photographer who is sympathetic to that. That’s why more often than not a more reportage style of wedding photography is suited to those who still prioritise their wedding photography but want it to be more than just about them.

Ultimately though for me it’s just about capturing people on the happiest of days with the people they love the most, that is the fabric of a wedding and it’s why I love my job. Below are some favourites from the past couple of years and if you would like to learn more about working with me and want to get in touch just hit the button.
